Stockport Comedy Clubs
I'd open with a joke here, but this is a post about comedy and the bar feels too high, frankly. What I will tell you is that Stockport has become synonymous with great comedy over the years, with intimate club nights and big-name headliners performing at independent venues across the town.
A Laugh in Stockport (aLiS)
Thread, Market Place
With a long-standing residency at Thread in the Market Place, ‘A Laugh in Stockport’ (aka aLiS) has been running since 2005 and brings in the finest comedians nearly every week. The night actually started out as ‘A Laughing Stockport Road’ back in Levenshulme, at the now closed M19 bar, and then was ran at Stockport Students Union for a good stint, plus a few different venues across town before finally landing at its very suitable current home in Thread.
‘aLiS’ puts on a range of different shows from classic stand-up comedy, improv murder mysteries to UK tour shows and nights dedicated to new acts and material. Past names include Joe Lycett, John Thompson, Fern Brady, Gary Delaney, Kiri Pritchard-McLean and Lost Voice Guy to name but a few; aLis is a hotbed for new talent. It's seated, over 18s only, and the benefits of being set in a Belgian beer bar means there are some fantastic drinks on offer while you enjoy the show.
Outside the Box
The Garrick Theatre, Wellington Road South
The Garrick is one of Stockport's most beloved community theatres, and it's been home to Outside the Box comedy nights since 2019. The club was originally launched in London by comedian Maff Brown with the ambition of creating a night that "everybody wanted to go to and every comedian wanted to play", and it's become a firm fixture here with regular sell-out shows.
Each bill features four comedians with ranging styles from across the UK, including recognisable headliners testing out new material so it's a great one for discovering something new. The vibe is friendly and laid back, and nights run throughout the year.
The next show is on June 5th featuring Harriet Dyer and Amit Mistry.
Chuckl.
Stockport Plaza, Mersey Square
If you’re looking for a comedy night that feels a bit fancy; maybe you’re treating your other half or your Mum wants to go and see “that comedian of the telly…”, Chuckl. rolls out the big-name headliners at the iconic Stockport Plaza every month. Recent and upcoming acts include Ed Byrne, Russell Kane and Gary Delaney, so this is the one to book if you’re after the main headliners. And of course, The Plaza is a stunning venue to spend an evening in, so you can dress up for the occasion (if you like).

Comedy in a Van
The Heatons Sports Club, Heaton Moor
Out of the town centre, The Heatons Comedy Evening runs on the first Sunday of every month and has been at The Heatons Sports Club, Heaton Moor since January 2010 .
Though small, the likes of John Bishop, Sarah Millican, Paul Sinha and Romesh Ranganathan have all performed there, which gives you an idea of the show standards. Shows start at 7.45pm and usually wrap before 10pm so ideal for a Sunday night with work the next morning. They often sell out in advance, so book early.
