Running in Stockport: Routes, Running Clubs & Where to Start

If you’re looking for the best places to go running in Stockport, you’re in the right place. Newbies take note: this is a town that really believes in hills…

I only started running in the deepest, darkest depths of lockdown back in 2021, like a lot of people in the UK. It began for two reasons: I needed an excuse to leave the house, and I was going through a breakup at the time, which turned out to be an incredibly productive combination. Couch to 5K felt like a socially acceptable way to get my daily steps in and process my feelings without (literally) bursting anyone else’s bubble.

After fully completing the app, 5K led to 10K, 10K led to a 1/2 Marathon and then before you know it, I’m three marathons down… and while that might sound impressive, it really isn’t once you see my pace. I still don’t consider myself a “good” runner and continue to have a love–hate relationship with it, but I do recognise the benefits, especially when it comes to headspace.

So it should be said that Stockport is in fact, a brilliant place to run if you like variety, scenery and a bit of character-building elevation. There are canals, parks, trails and (unfortunately or not, depending on your outlook) a lot of hills. But between the routes and the community, it’s a great place to build a running habit - whether you’re just starting out with Couch to 5K or training for something more ambitious.

One of the things that’s kept me running (aside from the promise of a delicious brunch, roast dinner or a big glass of Pinot Noir at the end of a long run- I’m sure you have your own incentives) is realising you don’t have to do it all on your own. Whilst running is a great way to carve out some ‘me-time’, it can also be hard to stay motivated. Luckily, Stockport has a genuinely brilliant running community that caters for all levels. If you’re looking for something social, supportive or more competitive, you’ll be able to find a group for you.

Running Clubs in Stockport

If you prefer running with other people, there are plenty of running clubs in Stockport to choose from, whether you want something relaxed and social or more structured and goal-focused.

RUN-MCR

RUNMCR is a super welcoming and inclusive running community with a strong presence in Stockport and Greater Manchester. They organise regular social runs and group sessions, which are ideal if you want to stay consistent, meet new people, and make running feel more fun and less like a chore. They usually start and end in a licensed establishment (which may or may not be the main selling point), and they also have GREAT merch.

Stockport Parkrun: Bramhall, Cheadle, Woodbank & Brabyns

If you’re not already familiar, Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k that takes place every Saturday morning in parks and green spaces all over the UK (and beyond). It’s run by volunteers, open to absolutely everyone, and you can walk it, jog it, run it, push a buggy round it or bring the dog*. You just register once, turn up, and take part at your own pace. For a lot of people, it’s the gateway into running.

Stockport is particularly well-served when it comes to Parkrun, with several great options nearby. Woodbank Memorial Park is probably the best-known locally (it’s hilly), but you’ve also got Bramhall Park, Cheadle Hulme and Brabyns Park Parkruns, all offering slightly different routes and vibes. Whether you’re chasing a time, building confidence, or just trying to make running a regular Saturday habit, Parkrun is one of the easiest and friendliest ways to do it.

*Dogs aren’t always allowed- especially when there are ducks about, so worth checking beforehand!

This Girl Can – Let’s Lift the Curfew (Stockport)

For women who want to feel more confident running outdoors, especially in the evenings, This Girl Can: Let’s Lift the Curfew is a brilliant new Stockport-based initiative run by Life Leisure. These supportive 5k runs focus on confidence, safety and community rather than speed or performance, and they’re ideal if you’re getting back into running or don’t want to run alone.

Athletics & Training Clubs in Stockport

If you’re looking for more structured training, coaching or competitive running, Stockport also has several well-established clubs.

Stockport Harriers & AC is the area’s main athletics club, offering coached sessions, track training and opportunities to compete in road races, cross country and track events.

There are also excellent local clubs including SK Striders, Bramhall Runners, Marple Runners and Moor Running Friends, all offering regular group runs and supportive training environments. For beginners, MileShyClub runs Couch to 5K programmes and beginner-friendly groups in Cheadle and Bramhall.

My Favourite Running Route in Stockport: Peak Forest Canal & Marple Locks

Marple Locks

If I had to pick one go-to running route in Stockport, it would be the Peak Forest Canal towards Marple. It’s one of the flattest and most scenic places to run in the area, making it perfect for easy runs, long runs, or days when you don’t want to fight a hill every five minutes.

If you keep going, you’ll reach the infamous Marple Lock Flight , a steep, 16-lock climb that’s become a bit of a local rite of passage for runners. It’s a relentless 1 mile if you can make it; They’re tough and extremely effective at building strength (and humility). The views just about make up for it as it’s gorgeously scenic, and a great way to add some serious challenge to an otherwise very peaceful canal run.

Is Stockport a Good Place to Start Running?

Short answer: yes - as long as you make peace with the hills.

Between the canal paths, parks, organised runs, Parkruns and running clubs, Stockport is a great place to start running, get fitter, or train for a race. If you’re doing Couch to 5K, running your first 5k, or building up to a half or full marathon, there’s a route and a community here for you.

And Marple Locks will always be waiting.
