Prologue starts a new chapter at Weir Mill

Some people collect art, owls, shoes… for me it’s books (and shoes, but that’s for another post). There’s something so satisfying about a new book, the texture, the smell… and so if you’re a collector like me, the news that Prologue, a new independent bookshop, cocktail bar and event space is opening at Weir Mill in a couple of weeks will fill you with absolute delight.
This new chapter for Stockport is brought to you by the marvellous team behind Bramhall's award-winning Simply Books (voted Independent Bookshop of the Year for the North of England at the 2025 British Book Awards, no less…). Prologue is their sister site, on a much bigger scale and includes a bookstore, a speciality coffee shop that transforms into a wine and cocktail bar in the evenings, co-working areas, a private room for book clubs, classes and even a stage all under the same roof.
The shop will live inside Weir Mill, the new Capital & Centric riverside neighbourhood that's seen the regeneration of Grade II-listed cotton mills and transformation of the area into a complex of 253 homes, green spaces and an exciting line-up of indie food and drink offerings.
"We've truly ripped up the bookshop rulebook to create something really special," says co-founder Ben Johns. "We wanted to build somewhere that feels like much more than a place to just buy a book, somewhere people can spend time, discover something new, meet authors and become part of a literary community."
Built for readers and writers
There’s a packed events programme promised including high profile author events, book launches, open mic and comedy nights with the same calibre of guests already hosted by Simply Books. To name a few, Ruth Jones, Jodi Picoult, Harlan Coben, Jacqueline Wilson and Oti Mabuse have all been through their doors in Bramhall.
For those of us who want somewhere to sit with a laptop, there's a dedicated library table for co-working, and reading nooks with adjustable lighting to take you from afternoon studying through to the evening. Prologue is also launching a dedicated book club room which will host up to thirty different clubs a month, from fantasy and romantasy genres to crime, thriller and non-fiction. If these are anything like the Simply Book clubs in Bramhall, they tend to sell out fast.
New concept
A new concept is that booksellers will work the shop floor with handheld devices rather than be found standing behind a desk so you get the opportunity to talk to someone in detail about what you're looking for should you choose to do so, which is a nice personalised touch. There will still be a concierge desk for purchasing event tickets, curated recommendations and sign-ups for book clubs and language classes.
The cafe will serve coffee and pastries in the morning for anyone using the space to write or work, moving into cocktails, wines and premium non-alcoholic drinks by evening and they're already taking bookings for private celebrations.
"This really is a new chapter for us," Johns adds. "When we started with an empty shell on a building site, it was tricky to know exactly what the space would look like. But we've worked really hard to create something truly special. We're so excited to welcome old customers and new ones alike."
