Christmas Wreath Workshops in Stockport

In Stockport wreath making has become one of the most highly sought nights out of the festive season it seems. What felt like a niche craft really took off during lockdown, when florists moved their workshops online and started posting out DIY kits, and it's never looked back. These days there's a wreath workshop in just about every bar, café and pub with a spare table between mid-November and Christmas, and across SK many of this year's sessions sold out the moment they were announced.

These days there’s a wreath workshop in just about every bar, café and pub with a spare table between mid-November and Christmas, not that that’s a complaint, but the tradition itself goes back a lot further than Instagram. The word comes from the Old English writhan, meaning to twist, and the Romans hung wreaths as a sign of victory long before anyone tied a bow on one. Evergreens were picked because they stay green through the darkest months as a reminder that life carries on through winter, and the circle has no beginning or end. The Victorians made Christmas greenery commonplace in British homes, and hanging it on the front door became a way of welcoming people (and a bit of festive spirit) inside.

If you would like to hang one on your door this year, here are ten wreath workshops across Stockport and the surrounding neighbourhoods, they’re selling out quickly too so don’t hang about:

Sweet Bud

Sweet Bud made the move from Levenshulme to Merseyway last year, becoming the first permanent florist in Stockport town centre for years. Owner Olivia (Liv to her customers) has been working as a florist since 2011, and she set Sweet Bud up in 2023 to offer a more sustainable kind of floristry. Her style is contemporary and creative with a real eye for colour and texture, so expect a wreath that turns heads on your front door

Liv's wreath nights have been flying out, so grab this one while you can. And if you miss out, she runs a workshop in her shop at 16 Merseyway one Wednesday every month, so keep an eye out for the new year line-up.

Victoria Rose at Agapanthus

Victoria Rose is a sustainable florist based in Manchester and her festive wreath workshops are coming to Agapanthus Interiors on Wellington Street for two Stockport dates. Everything is sustainably sourced with British seasonal foliage, florals and dried elements finished off with velvet ribbon, and the finished wreath is fully compostable. There are festive nibbles and drinks and a Christmas playlist on the go, and it suits complete beginners as well as seasoned makers. Bring an apron or gloves if you like, and wear something you don't mind getting a bit messy.

Can't make either Stockport date? Victoria has more sessions in Chorlton and Ancoats.

AimeeA at Stockport Gin

Gin and greenery, a combination that's hard to argue with. Florists AimeeA are heading back to Stockport Gin's bar on St Petersgate for another of their festive wreath nights, which have become a bit of a fixture here. Your materials come in a goodie bag waiting at your table, and the bar's open all evening, so you can work your way through a G&T or two while you build your wreath. Fresh foliage, two hours, and you're five minutes from the station at the end of it.

Arc at Hat Works

Arc is the creative wellbeing charity with its studios and café inside Hat Works, and its Christmas Wreath Making Evening is a lovely way to see the old mill after dark. Florist and event stylist Jacklyn talks you through building your wreath from scratch, to a Christmassy soundtrack with festive drinks and coffees available from the café. You're welcome to bring a few bits from your own garden too like evergreen cuttings, hydrangea heads or berries to add an even more personal touch to your creation.

Arc uses creativity to support people's mental health, so your ticket (and whatever you spend in the café) goes back into its programmes. Have a mooch round the exhibition and shop while you're there.

Urban Bloom

Urban Bloom is the floral design studio of Catherine, a Stockport local whose whole thing is "when fashion and flowers collide". Her day job is editorial florals for weddings, events and brands, and that shows in these workshops: glossy, a bit luxe, and always paired with something nice in a glass. Every ticket includes expert guidance, all the foliage and decorations, and a festive drink.

She has three sessions left this season. The Remi's morning comes with a mimosa or hot drink and a freshly baked pastry, and a brunch-and-wreath Saturday sounds pretty ideal to me. Wreath & Relax is a slower, more mindful take that Catherine is running with Jai Yoga Studio, with a glass of fizz (non-alcoholic options too). And at the Flute & Firkin there's fizz or a local beer and a mince pie, with just 14 spaces. Tickets are non-refundable, so check your diary before you book.

The Wreath Edit at the Flute & Firkin

Art Club

Art Club is Angela Lock's café, bar and art space, set in a former dress shop just off Heaton Moor Road. Angela is an illustrator and textile designer who's lived in the Heatons for 25 years, and Art Club has become the kind of place where you can turn up for a flat white, a pint of Neighbourhood Brew Co or a life drawing class and nobody bats an eyelid.

Its Winter Wreath Workshop is a little different to most of this list. You'll be working with willow, so the finished wreath is all natural and compostable, and it's made to last well beyond Twelfth Night and a mulled wine or glass of fizz on arrival.

Blue Door Flowers

Blue Door has been doing flowers for Heaton Moor for years, and its wreath workshop is the traditionalist's pick. You'll learn to build a proper mossed door wreath packed with seasonal foliage that stays fresh right through to New Year if you look after it. Numbers are kept small so you get plenty of help and refreshments are included.

Book by ringing the shop. No apps, no booking fees. They also run private workshops for groups of six if you fancy arranging one for your friends.

Moormoth

This one's the most intimate on the list. Moormoth's workshops take place around the table in the maker's own Victorian house in Heaton Moor, with just eight people per session, so it feels more like a festive get-together than a class. You'll work with fresh winter foliage, natural botanicals, ribbons and handcrafted metal pieces (that last bit is what sets these apart), with tea, coffee and festive treats to keep you going. Allow around two and a half hours.

  • When: Sunday 29th November, 2pm, and Thursday 3rd December, 7 to 9.30pm, plus a few more dates

  • Where: Moormoth home studio, Lea Road, Heaton Moor, SK4 4JT

  • Price: £55

  • How to book: AllEvents

Osher Wellness at Studio 17

If your idea of festive is less Slade and more switching off, this is the one. Osher Wellness and Nova Dream are teaming up for a session in Studio 17's garden studio that's half wreath workshop, half sound bath. Florist Holly, who has more than 20 years in the trade, guides you through dressing a fresh wreath, with an accessory station of baubles, ribbons and dried fruit if you want to go all out. Then Georgia takes over with crystal bowls, chimes and a sound journey to help you unwind. Herbal teas are included. The sound bath isn't suitable during the first trimester of pregnancy, with electrical medical implants or for people with epilepsy.

Dig Inn

My pick, Dig Inn is one of Marple’s more eclectic spots. An independent café bar, plant and flower shop and vinyl store all in one on Stockport Road, with crates of records on one side and bouquets on the other. There are eight keg lines at the bar and homemade café food, and naturally wreath making forms part of it’s Christmas line up this year.

With mulled wine, treats from PureGlow Wellness are coming and Tropic natural skincare, there will be plenty of stocking filler ideas to browse and free hand massages, so you get a bit of Christmas self-care with your wreath. The December dates come with lunchtime sessions too, handy if your evenings are already booked up.

MakeSpace High Peak

If moss and foliage aren’t really your thing, MakeSpace is the non-traditional option. It’s a creative studio just over the border in New Mills, built around creativity as a way to switch off, with mindful art classes and craft clubs taking place all year round.

The Christmas Craftathon swaps the classic door wreath for three mini workshops in one afternoon: star weaving, card making and decorating your own tree decorations. Materials, tools, step-by-step guidance and hot drinks are all included and you’ll go home with a handful of handmade decorations for the tree and the mantelpiece. It’s aimed at adults, but over-12s are welcome with a participating adult. It’s a short walk from both New Mills stations so it’s an easy trip from Stockport on the train.
