Meet Sweat Squad: Stockport's Friendliest Fitness Community

Not every fitness class becomes a community, but Sweat Squad have made it their philosophy right from the start.

Based in Stockport with a gym in Cheadle Heath, they mean it when they say everybody is welcome. Their members range from age 7 to 65 years old and everyone trains together.

How it started

Sweat Squad grew out of lockdown, when Stockport personal trainer Shane Lee started organising outdoor meet-ups in Vernon Park. With gyms closed and people craving something to do together, the sessions became a regular fixture and the community that formed around them stuck around long after restrictions lifted. Eventually they found a permanent indoor home at their current gym space in Cheadle Heath.

Shane has been a personal trainer in Stockport since 2012, and he's always been clear that what he's building isn't just a fitness business. His clients have become friends and the sessions a community, and in 2017 he was nominated for the Stockport Community Hero Award, which he won.

What is calisthenics?

Pronounced Cal-iss-THEN-ics, it's bodyweight training. Think press-ups, squats, dips, holds, and pulls using your own body as the resistance rather than gym equipment or weights. The focus is on building strength, control and mobility in a way that works with your body.

The conversation around strength training and fitness has shifted significantly in recent years, with more and more research pointing to strength work as one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health. We're not just talking aesthetics; regular strength training supports bone density, metabolism, mental health and everyday functional movement. It's increasingly recommended across all age groups, and for women particularly, it's become a mainstream health topic.

Calisthenics is one of the most accessible entry points into strength training. Consistent practice makes progress visible; the movements are simple and you don't need a gym or any expensive equipment, just a bit of space and willingness to show up for yourself.

Who are the sessions for?

Everyone. Sweat Squad is pretty adamant about this. Bring your kids, bring your nan, bring your mate who's been meaning to start something for months AND the other one who already trains five days a week. The sessions are built around incremental progress and consistency rather than performance. They’re designed to be supportive and meet people wherever they are in their fitness journey, helping them move forward at their own pace.

The community that's grown around Sweat Squad reflects that. There are people of different ages and fitness levels all showing up together, and outside of the classes they regularly organise local events, group challenges, and there has even been a trip out to Everest Base Camp as a crew together.
