5 Perfect New Year Walks around Stockport
If you’re heading out early to clear your head or squeezing in a gentle stroll mid-afternoon, these Stockport parks are ideal for a New Year’s Day walk. Easy to get to, good for all energy levels, and no planning required.
1. Reddish Vale Country Park
Postcode: SK5 7HE
Nearest parking: Reddish Vale Visitor Centre car park (Reddish Vale Road)
One of Stockport’s biggest green spaces, Reddish Vale is great if you like having options. The 16-arch viaduct is the main landmark, with the River Tame running through the valley and plenty of wildlife dotted along the way. There’s a real mix of routes here too - woodland paths, open meadows and riverside walks- so you can keep it gentle or stretch your legs a bit more depending on the mood you’re in.
Why it’s great on New Year’s Day: Plenty of space, never feels too busy.
2. Bramhall Park
Postcode: SK7 3NX
Nearest parking: Bramhall Park main car park (off Hall Road)
Set in the grounds of the historic Bramhall Hall, a magnificent 14th century timber framed Tudor house, Bramhall Park offers an easy, scenic option for a slower start to the year. 70 acres of landscaped gardens, woodland trails, duck ponds and a play area make this ideal for a relaxed family stroll (especially if you’re avoiding mud and hills.)
Why it’s great on New Year’s Day: Calm, accessible and low-effort.
3. Woodbank Park & Vernon Park
Postcode: SK1 4JR (Woodbank Park) / SK1 4DJ (Vernon Park)
Nearest parking: Woodbank Park car park (Turncroft Lane) or limited street parking near Vernon Park
My favourite, these neighbouring parks work brilliantly as one combined walk. Woodbank offers open meadows and woodland trails and even a ‘beach’, while Vernon Park adds formal gardens and riverside paths.
Why it’s great on New Year’s Day: Lots of variety without travelling far.
4. Brabyns Park, Marple Bridge
Postcode: SK6 5DT
Nearest parking: Brabyns Brow car park
Set alongside the River Goyt, Brabyns Park feels calm and slightly tucked away. Open playing fields, woodland paths and riverside walking make it ideal if you want a quieter, more reflective start to the year. Cross the bridge and a short stroll will take you to the boating lake at Etherow.
Why it’s great on New Year’s Day: Peaceful and scenic, especially in winter.
5. Mersey Vale Nature Park
Mersey Vale Nature Park

Nearest parking: Limited street parking on Battersea Road and nearby residential streets
A more natural, slightly wilder option with winding paths, woodland areas and plenty of wildlife with the Transpennine Trail running through.Best suited if you don’t mind uneven ground and a bit of mud underfoot.
